In 2006, 773 bicyclists died on US roads; 92% of these deaths were the result of crashes with motor vehicles. One in eight bicyclists who are injured from a bicycle crash has a traumatic brain injury and 2/3 of the bicycle crash fatalities result from traumatic brain injury. It is estimated that from 45% to 88% of these traumatic brain injuries could have been prevented if the cyclist had been wearing a helmet. Due to these and many other statistics that show overwhelmingly that bicycle helmets save lives, the Northwest Region EMS Council provides helmets to many community organizations (fire departments, health districts, hospitals, Head Start programs, scouting organizations and sponsors of youth-oriented community events) for distribution to the youth in our Region at no charge. We also provide information on properly fitting helmets and bike rodeo/safety event coordination. We are very grateful to the Helmets For Youth Foundation for their continued support of our bicycle helmet program. For further information about our Youth Bicycle Helmet program, call 360-479-5631.
