Falls Prevention

HOME Falls, especially for senior citizens, are the second leading cause of accidental death and the leading cause of hospitalization in our Region.  Between the years 2000 and 2004, there were 182 deaths and 5,776 hospitalizations due to falls in Mason, Clallam, Jefferson and Kitsap Counties.

A recently study found that the top ways for seniors to prevent falls were:

  • participate in a regular exercise program
  • take steps to make your home safer
  • review your medications with your doctor
  • have your vision checked regularly

The Northwest Region EMS & TCC Injury Prevention program has formed partnerships with several groups dedicated to helping seniors to prevent falls such as senior citizen centers, Meals on Wheels, assisted living centers, EMS providers, volunteers, hospitals and clinics.  Our Falls Prevention Brochures are distributed regularly through these organizations.
